Nick Demske, executive director of the Racine Public Library, shares his experience creating space for minorities in libraries through a guided conversation with LACONI POP board member Chris Corrigan. Nick’s passionate approach to equity, diversity, and inclusion is a cornerstone of his library career.
Nick Demske is the Executive Director of the Racine Public Library. Demske began his library career in Racine’s circulations department in 2007. During his time, he earned a Master’s in Library and Information Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 2021, Demske became the Racine Public Library’s first deputy director. Demske brings a focus on equity, diversity, inclusion (EDI) and anti-racism to his career, particularly in the fields of transformative justice and sustainability. This includes work such as helping to build the first Participatory Defense Hub in the country to be housed at a library, founding the BONK! Arts and Culture series, hosting the annual Mary Finley and Marcie Eanes Black History Month Read-In, and planting the seeds that would become the Racine Public Library’s literal “seed library.”
Questions for Nick will be collected in advance. A Google form will be sent out to registered participants the week before the program.
